Urban Sensor Hack

How can sensor-based applications help us understand the urban environment and how people interact within it? How can sensor platforms make it easy and affordable to build and deploy numerous sensors in urban areas? How can you get started creating sensor-based applications to experiment and learn about the world you live in?

MAKING AND HACKING. Maker Sessions is a series of live online events using Google Plus and a Google Plus community to bring together makers online and at physical locations for hacking and making. Maker Sessions are organized around a theme or a purpose – to look at technologies that enable new applications and to encourage people of all skill levels and interests to participate in the development of ideas and applications. (To be honest, Maker Camp was so popular this summer that we decided to offer this new kind of online/offline experience for adults.)

HACKING THE HACKATHON. Maker Sessions is like a hackathon but it’s not about getting together in one place for long hours. It’s about getting makers together where they live and where they work – at home, at a university or at makerspaces. It’s about exploring an opportunity to do something cool – something that perhaps nobody else is doing. But it’s also an opportunity to learn from master makers about an application area and discover cool maker projects. Maker Sessions is an invitation for you to join us and get involved in shaping what this program can become.

LIVE EVENTS. Urban Sensor Hack starts September 24th with a launch event in Chicago. Make will host a series of events for three weeks, introducing master makers and looking at programs and projects that incorporate all kinds of sensors. We also invite makerspaces and university clubs to participate by signing up as an affiliate. Our first 20 sites will get an Urban Sensor Hack Pack full of parts and supplies that you might use to build your own applications. Urban Sensor Hack will end October 15th with an online show-and-tell with our best applications.
