WHAT YOU WILL NEED

  • Razor Blade
  • 3" & 1" wide clear tape
  • 12" wide Plastic Wrap
  • 4 Corrugated Cardboard Sheets 36" x 16"
  • Hot Plate
  • Aluminum pie pan
  • Water

Assembly Instructions

Experiments should be preformed at home only with adult supervision and all appropriate safety precautions should be taken. All directions should be followed exactly and no substitutions should be used.

  1. On each of the four Corrugated Cardboard Sheets draw a rectangle 1/2" wide and 30" tall. The top of the rectangle will be 1" from the top and right side of the rectangle will be 1 1/2" from the right edge. These will be rectangle A. See figure 1.
  2. On two of the four Corrugated Cardboard Sheets draw a rectangle 10" wide and 28" tall. The top of the rectangle will be 4" from the top and the left side of the rectangle will be 2" from the left edge. These will be rectangle B. See figure 2.
  3. With the razor blade cut out all rectangles.
  4. Roll out 2 pieces of plastic wrap 30" long. Lay each piece over the cut-out of rectangle B. There should be an 1" overlap on each side.
  5. Using the 1" clear tape, seal all of the edges of the plastic wrap.
  6. Now lay all four sheets side by side. Make sure rectangle A is on the right hand side and the two sheets with rectangle B are together. See figure 3.
  7. Using the 3" wide tape, tape each sheet together.
  8. Stand the pieces up and fold them into a square. Now tape the remaining corner. This is the completed steam tornado chamber.
  9. Place the hot place on a level surface. Place the pie pan, 3/4 filled with water, on the hot place. Place the steam tornado chamber over the hot place. At the point where the electrical cord exits the chamber cut a small hole so the chamber sits flush against the surface.
  10. Lift the chamber and turn on the hot plate.

NOTE: DO NOT LET THE WATER COMPLETELY BOIL OFF

Once the water starts to boil you should see a vortex forming above the surface. For best results, reduce drafts in the room.
