Lawsuit Update

LVL1 was served with a summons to appear in small claims court on May 11, 2022 at 1:00pm. The claim was filed against us by Kenneth Butler. He claims LVL1 did not allow him sufficient time or access to the space to remove his personal property. He also claims ownership of a drink vending machine donated to us by FirstBuild. (See March O&D minutes for our letter to him requesting he remove his property and how to do so.)

Butler arranged to come to the space April 15, the last day of the period we allowed him, to retrieve his items. He was met at the space removed a snack vending machine only leaving several other items. He did not remove refuse he emptied from his vending machine, or gunk that has oozed from the machine and solidified on the floor. He was not allowed to remove the FirstBuild-donated machine.

We are following the advice of an attorney Raj consulted two years ago when issues with Butler first arose.

Sean: what will we consider winning? Board: complete severing of our relationship with Butler, recognizing that winning in small claims court may or many not achieve that result.

Raj, Andy and Tiffany will represent LVL1 in court.

Financials

  • Financially healthy
  • 77 members
  • 1 makership awarded last month, 2 more apps coming up for review

Tiffany suggested we should look at spending some marketing /advertising budget money on stickers, pens, badges, . . . Bill is lasercutting personalized VL1 keychains.

Sean asked if we have a more efficient way to count current members for FAPs and such? Not yet. Tiffany and Daniel will explore Pike13 alternatives in May.

Space Improvements

Boneyard redesign

  • Will continue to collect ideas from Google group.
  • Remaining wood will be partially cleared out after hackathon 4-30.
  • Possibilities:
  • Move vending and sewing if space adequately heated - will also free up space in front.
  • Make area for Tiffany's resin works. Requires ventilation.
  • Hardware hacking area
  • Workshop area
  • Buy a clay / glass kiln - not something a person can reasonably have at home. Amy suggested contacted Nashville makerspace about their experience housing a kiln. Tim will contact.
  • Amy volunteered to start a library cleanup in the classroom

New Business

  • Shopbot fixed
  • Tonight's Tea Party a success - thanks, Amy!
  • New memberships on an uptick. Members we have lost are due to financial hardship and personal reasons, not dissatisfaction with the space.
  • Keeping equipment working is key to retaining members. Currently nothing broken.
  • Friday impromptu hackathons good venue for involving people in the space - activity picking up.
