Member vs Nonmember?
Many have asked, what is the difference between being a member or a nonmember. While we would love to have more people join our ranks in the membership roles, you will never be pressured to join. We currently have enough members to pay for rent and utilities as well as having enough extra to buy some really cool stuff. Members help decide what new toys we buy, and both members and nonmembers benefit from such purchases. Examples of this is our makerbot, our minimill or our metal working equipment.

What are the benefits of membership
Dues paying members have the benefit of the following:
- 24/7 access to our space via a key as well as an RFID card access.
- Voting privileges for organizational changes and elections
- Funds Allocation Process (FAP) voting privileges for expenditures exceeding $100.
- Dedicated storage space (shelf with your name on it).
- Privilege of saying you are a member of LVL1!
What are the Eligibility Requirements of Membership?
Any person 18 years of age or older shall become a Member upon:
- Signature of at least 3 current members to act as member sponsors
- Verification of a completed membership form by the Secretary, and
- Timely payment of dues as determined by the board of directors.
A member must also provide government-issued photo identification to at least two members of the board of directors at the time of payment of the first membership fee, and provide an electronic mail address for receiving official notice of members' meetings. Any person who does meet these requirements is a Member of LVL1.
What if I can't afford to be a member?
There are several reasons a person can't be a dues paying member, but no one will hold that against you. A large portion of our meeting attendees are "associate" members that are essentially guests that don't pay the monthly dues, yet participate in LVL1 events and activities, use the equipment and attend regular subgroups. Memberships are optional, but not pushed.
One alternative option for a temporary full membership are our Makerships.
As a guest can I use the equipment?
LVL1 guests can use our equipment provided they completely understand how to use such equipment, and members and other guests are always willing to show how to use the equipment. But if you don't know, don't use. Much of our equipment is very complicated and/or is on loan. Responsible use of equipment is expected for guests and members alike.
Can I still access the space as a nonmember?
LVL1 Guests still can use the space and our equipment provided a waiver has been signed and there is a member there willing to host you. We have never heard of a member denying a person access, but they aren't required to admit anyone in, especially if they don't know you, or they are about to leave. The key to non-member access to the space is to show up to the Tuesday meetings and establish relationships with members and other guests.
If there are guests at the space and the last member leaves the space, all guests must leave. This is a requirement of all members to ensure security of the space.
