Welcome

Welcome to LVL1!

Summer of Hacking and Making JUST DO IT

April 30th - There's too much wood at the space

so might as well hack both problems.

Announcing the Wooden that be Useful hackathon. The challenge is to make the most useful item out of the woodpile and boneyard. Build a workbench, shelves, chairs, a benchwork, chairs made of shelves, a fully functional henge, or multi-handled gradunzas. Anything that would make LVL1 or your own life better is an option, but if it's for you, you need to take it with you. Individuals or teams are welcome. There will be as-yet-to-be-determined prizes, stay tuned for that announcement. The name of this hackathon may also change depending on the number of groans generated at the meeting when it is announced, the name will be revised until we find one that nobody likes.

Rules

  • - Every item must use wood, but metal and boneyard items can also be used. A couple of buckets of screws will be provided, 3D printed items, microcontrollers and other bits can be used, but the majority must be from the boneyard/scrap areas and a substantial portion must be made from the wood pile.
  • -Once a piece of wood has been removed from the pile, it cannot be returned to the pile. Use it, trade it, blend it and drink it in a smoothie, or take it with you.

* - All conflicts over items will be settled in a Gordian manner. If two people want the same 8 feet long 2x4, it will be cut in half, not necessarily in the direction, anyone would desire. If two people want the same 5V power supply, it will be cut in half and they can each have 2.5 volts.

  • - Best useful item made from wood wins. Items that are useful for the space can remain at the space, personally useful items must leave with the team.
  • Snacks and a pizza dinner will be provided.
  • Hackathon will take place on April 30th starting at 10am, tools down at 6pm. Individuals or teams can have an extra 30 minutes of work time by agreeing to clean up the woodshop and main area (if no teams accept, we all clean up). Presentations and judging will begin at 6:30.

The Tim VanSant Makership LVL1's Makership Program

  • We have AWARDED a Makership!
  • We have a second Makership recipient in progress!

Note: This program is funded completely through donations and NOT through our membership dues.

  • We currently have enough funds to offer a Makership. Please submit an application to become a member of LVL1! See our treasurer, make a donation.
  • Members: please talk up the Makership to potential new members. Makerships are a good way to interest minorities and women in LVL1. Emphasize the experience and the opportunity. Getting a project done is less important.
  • Makership Application Deadline is the last day of each month @ 11:59 PM.
  • Submit your project for a chance to win 3 months of LVL1 membership and a $100 reimbursement toward your project expenses.
  • Apply at www.lvl1.org/makership. Also, send any questions about how to submit a successful application to www.lvl1.org/makership. We want to award a Makership!
  • If your application is not approved, PLEASE revise and resubmit next month.
  • If you would like to donate ($5/mo) to this worthy cause, see one of the directors and we can set you up!

Broken/Equipment Report

  • At the moment, nothing is broken! *

Please make sure that you review the instructions and manual and ask for the training prior to using the equipment.

    • If something is broken or needs to be replaced, please send an email to broken@lvl1.org.
    • Please supply as much information as possible; links to websites or items are GREATLY appreciated. Consumables can be time-consuming to find; broken is not a mind reader!

    • If your project doesn't fit on your shelf, please take it offsite. The boneyard is not your own personal storage shed.

Member's Responsibilities

  • Per Fire Inspector's visit this week, do not wrap anything around the red sprinkler pipes. Touching them is OK. No wrapping, electrical or otherwise.* If you see something that is wrong, say something!
  • Member hosts are responsible for the space and non-member guests
  • Please make sure guests sign the waiver
  • Member hosts are empowered to ask visitors who do not conduct themselves according to LVL1's policies and community standards to leave
  • More details on the Members' List
